Gbc Shredmaster Sc-060 Shredder Review

The GBC Shredmaster SC060 is a shredder that is designed to be placed atop your wastebasket for easy and convenient shredding. Here we will take a closer look at this machine, and give you what we consider to be some if its strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

1.) We found that the SC060 easily lived up to its claimed capacity of nine sheets at a time, and also found that it had no problems at all with paperclips or staples. It is rated for shredding credit cards as well.

2.) The SC060 is pretty versatile in that it is designed to sit atop a wastebasket, meaning that you can place it on just about any receptacle you choose. There is an adjusting arm which will enable you to fit it on baskets from thirteen inches across to sixteen inches. The SC060 won't cover the whole opening of most wastebaskets, meaning you will be able to leave it in place and still use the receptacle for other trash.

3.) The SC060's three settings increase the versatility of this machine and we found them pretty handy. We really liked how we could set the shredder to start automatically when paper is placed into the feed. This makes using the SC060 very convenient. There is also a manual setting you can use in the forward position to shred smaller sheets, or to perhaps help with the occasional paper jam. Also handy in helping to remove paper jams is the reverse function.

4.) The warranty that GBC offers is pretty impressive for such a relatively inexpensive, light duty machine. There is two years coverage on the motor for the SC060, and the cutting blades are warranted for five years. Obviously GBC has some faith in this machine as well.

5.) The SC060 operates at a pretty decent speed of about fifteen feet per minute, which translates into about four seconds for the average letter size sheet.

Weaknesses:

1.) Although rated for five hundred sheets per day, the SC060 is designed for moderate use at best. You will likely run into problems with overheating if you try to use this shredder for more than a few minutes at a time. If the unit overheats, it will turn itself off, and will require a cooling down period of about a half hour before you can use it again. Not a deal breaker, but something that you should be aware of.

2.) The SC060 is a strip cut shredder, meaning that it cuts your documents into long strips that are a quarter of an inch wide. Strip cut shredding, it must be said, offers the lowest security, and fills up wastebaskets pretty quickly. If you are going to be shredding documents that you consider especially private, secure, or confidential, you should, in all likelihood, look for s shredder that shreds in the cross cut style.

3.) With a feed opening of only nine inches, you will only be able to feed letter size sheets into the SC060 without having to tear or fold the papers first. This is not a deal breaker, but might add a little more time to the process.
