subject: Things To Know About Yorkshire Terriers Before Purchasing Them [print this page]

Yorkshire Terriers, also known as Yorkies, are a popular breed of pets. They are a member of the small breed dog population which means they are not very big. This is one of their most appealing attributes as a dog. Usually, when a potential pet owner is in the market for a dog, they look at the size of the breed before anything else. The truth of the matter is that there are several things that any potential pet owner should know about Yorkies before making the buying decision.

First, Yorkies usually stand about seven or eight inches tall. The measurement for dogs usually goes from the ground to the shoulder. Typically, these little dogs only weigh between three to seven pounds. Just like people, their height and weight vary. Usually, the reason most potential pet owners are concerned with the size and weight of a potential pet is because that will determine how much the pet in question will eat. Bigger pets require more food. More food leads to more costs which can make being a pet owner a liability. Yorkies are an excellent choice for pet owners who are looking for a smaller type of dog.

There are several different blends of Yorkies that can change their look and size. For instance, a mix between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle would be a Yorkie Poo. A mix between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier is known as Morkie. Pure bread Yorkies are much easier to stereotype regarding their potential behavior. It's important that all potential Yorkie owners realize this.

When it comes to potential behavior, Yorkies have several inherited tendencies. Typically, one can expect a Yorkie to enjoy cuddling and snuggling. Since these dogs are not the best at roughhousing and mischief, they are probably best kept away from small children. These types of dogs are also known for their high-pitched bark and their willingness to announce visitors. Those who appreciate a silent atmosphere would do well to keep away from this type of dog.

There are many pros to a Yorkie. They do not take up very much space which makes them ideal to carry around. They also are very light shedders which mean that pet hair will not be much of a problem. They are a very graceful animal as well. Those who do not want to have to worry about providing ample exercise would do well with a Yorkie as they only require minimum work outs. Thanks to their extreme willingness to announce strangers, Yorkies also make an excellent watchdog as well. Indeed, there are some great characteristics about this specific breed of dog.
