Fellowes Intellishred Ps-79ci Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

The Fellowes Intellishred PS-79Ci is a personal desk side shredder with some interesting features and capabilities. Here we have compiled a list of some of the strengths and weaknesses of the PS-79Ci.

Strengths:

1.) If there's one thing we can't stand, it's paper jams, and the PS-79Ci appears to have eliminated them altogether. Their unique system features a gauge-like series of lights that allow the user to see how close to the machine's capacity you are operating. If the light is green, you can add a more paper, if it's yellow, you're in the zone, and if it's red you'll have to remove some of the paper for the shred job to resume. The lights are bright and plain and easy to read. The PS-79Ci also seems to be able to power right through paper that is unevenly fed into the throat opening.

2.) When looking at shredders, we like to keep a special eye on safety features, and Fellowes seems to be leading the industry in that regard. Their innovative SafeSense system uses electronic sensors located at the fed opening slot that detect body heat and stop the machine immediately when hands and fingers are too close. It's a pretty remarkable system that we tested numerous times, and were very impressed by. The shredder also ceases to operate when the waste bin is full or when the door to the bin is opened.

3.) The PS-79Ci shreds paper in a cross cut pattern, which is vastly superior and more secure than strip cut. In 2005 the feds enacted some regulations that mandate how certain types of information (mostly those that criminals can use for ID theft) be destroyed when it is discarded. The PS-79Ci is a level 3 security machine, meaning that it meets those guidelines. Frankly, we're not sure why anyone would use anything but a cross-cut shredder like the PS-79Ci for their confidential documents.

4.) For a smaller desk side shredder, the PS-79Ci has a capacity and capabilities that are rather impressive indeed. We really liked, for example, that this machine could shred paper clips, staples and credit cards, but were truly impressed that the PS-79Ci could shred compact discs as well. Confidential information comes in a lot of forms these days, and its nice to see a personal shredder with the capability to destroy digital media. The PS-79Ci met its stated capacity of 12 sheets per pass with ease as well, though your results may vary depending on your power supply and type of paper you are shredding.

5.) The PS-79Ci has a lot of the "little things" we like to see in a shredder as well, such as: automatic on and off enabled by electronic sensors, nice quiet operation, and heavy duty casters.

Weaknesses:

1.) The PS-79Ci is a great personal shredder, but you should keep in mind that it is meant to be used on an as-needed basis, and not for huge shredding jobs. This shredder can run for only about 10 or 12 continuous minutes before it will need a rest to prevent overheating.
