Gerber Baby  More Than Just A Brand

One of the most well known product logos in the world, the Gerber baby is recognized throughout the world. Considered by many to be the image of the ideal baby, it is a beloved symbol that has represented this popular baby food company for over 80 years. Since its humble beginnings, this wonderful image has inspired warm feelings in consumer and is thought to be what launched Gerber Baby Foods into being the most popular baby food on the planet.

Started small town of Fremont, Michigan, the company now known as Gerber decided it was time for a new look in 1928. They were only sold locally, but wanted something new for their packaging, so they had a contest for a painting or drawing to go on a new label.

There were many submissions, and the judges had a difficult decision to make. Ironically, the drawing that won was considered to be a rough sketch by the artist and she wanted to polish it up for the label. But, the charcoal sketch of beautiful 5-month-old Ann Turner was chosen by the judges who requested to keep it as is. The tousled hair and pursed lips of this adorable child was the perfect image for their label, so artist Dorothy Hope Smith was named the winner.

The first time the image was seen nationally as the company attempted to grow, was in Good Housekeeping magazine. From there, Gerber Baby Food became a phenomenon, as did the image of baby Ann. She became the most recognized baby in the world, and still is today. With the label undergoing only minor changes since then, Ann still remains the face of Gerber. In fact, she was there when they unleashed an updated version of the label at age 60. Its amazing to see that this well-known baby is all grown up now.
