An Introduction To Online Boggle

Chances are pretty good that you have heard of online Boggle, the word making game with different ways to play and tons of possible word combinations. For the most part the online versions are just like the traditional board game version, except when you play on the Internet you can match your skills against other players from all over the world. You can also play against your computer or play with up to four of your friends around your computer. You have to make as many words as you can before you time runs out, and with online Boggle you get more points for unique words, just as you do with the traditional board game version.

The purpose of this game is to discover as many words as possible from a random collection of letters that are selected. A valid word can only be formed if each of the letters is on the persons board. There are some different various versions of the game that are available online too, some of them allowing a different random set up of letters to allow contiguous letters to form words if they are side by side, above each other or below each other and even on the diagonal with the next. Usually no letter position can be used more than once in a word. For example if you can make the word snake with your letters and you only have one S, you would not be able to form the word snakes in online Boggle.

So how are these online Boggle games scored? This varies according to the version that you are playing, but in general there are three criteria that are used to determine the final point value of words that are created from the given letters. Words that have three and four letters are given a score of a certain amount, five letter words are worth a little more, and so on and so on, usually giving one more point for every additional letter that is used. Usually it is also a factor as to how common each word is in the English language, and you can earn bonus points for rare, hard to make or unusual words. Finally, there are also little bonus points that are awarded for words that include difficult letters, such as Q, Z, and X.

Now inevitably it always comes up when one player creates a word in online Boggle that another player claims is not a true word. In this case a dictionary has to be used to confirm the existence of said word. There are different versions of online Boggle that use different dictionaries, but rest assured that they all make sure that the words created really do exist.
