The Online Shopping Spree Of A Modern Mum

My daughter turned seventeen the other day, and unlike when she was very young, I now work long hours and find it impossible to make the time to go shopping. Luckily for me, all her favourite things are available on the internet, so I decided to really throw myself into the online shopping phenomenon. Now I have, I fear I am hooked, so to make myself feel better I thought I'd share my indulgent spree.

Online shopping to me used to be all about eBay and Amazon, and if it wasn't on there then I wouldn't buy it; my reasons being that I was terrified of being duped by a fraudulent site, having my money and personal information stolen and never receiving my goods. I have found a way to find trustworthy sites though; in the product pages of all the best glossy magazines. Once upon a time my favourite ladies magazines would be telling me to traipse the high street to bag the latest bargain, but now they are telling me to trawl the internet to scoop the best boutique bargains without ever leaving the comfort of my chair.

For my daughter's birthday I settled down to my online shopping spree with a nice glass of Argentinean Malbec and had some gentle blues music playing in the background. Next I flicked through my magazines and went to websites I thought would sell trinkets and treats that would light up the face of any growing girl. Needless to say I managed to purchase more than I originally intended, I'm blaming the wine for that one, but I made my daughter's birthday the best she ever had.

One of the best things about online shopping is that it is possible to buy unusual items made by creative individuals that would only be found in remote boutiques and craft stalls. I purchased carefully crafted earrings made from leather shaped like leaves, and a bespoke charm bracelet with modern trinkets that represent the important things of her generation. I also managed to get hold of a rare edition of her favourite comic book, signed by the artist and the author.

Many people blame the internet and our tendency to absorb ourselves in the latest technologies for social separation, but believe it or not I found a closeness and affiliation with my daughter through online shopping. It made me realise how much I know about her and it gave me a chance to show how much I care.
