Another Great Summer For Theatre Breaks In London

There is any number of reasons to explain why 2009 was the most profitable year for London's theatre industry - from recession-beaten audiences feeling a greater need for escapism to the success of Andrew Lloyd Webber's TV audition shows encouraging couch potatoes to head out for a night at the West End.

With Lloyd Webber and his contemporaries staging even more ambitious and exciting shows this summer, 2010 may prove to be another record-breaking year for theatre breaks in the capital, and many of the best shows are taking place right now at London's prestigious theatres.

The debut of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera sequel, Love Never Dies, caused a resurgence of interest in the composer's back catalogue earlier this year, even if reviews were lukewarm on the whole. However, his recent TV series Over the Rainbow has already whet the appetites of many theatre-goers over the upcoming Wizard of Oz musical.

Not that fans of the show will have to wait until next year to see one of its stars performing in the West End, however, with the recent news that contestant Lauren Samuels is taking over the lead role of Sandy in Grease as the show opens for its third triumphant season at the Piccadilly Theatre this August.

The classic rock 'n' roll musical is just one of the shows that's got genre fans excited this summer, with the news that screen legend Whoopi Goldberg will be taking over the role of Mother Superior for a number of exclusive performances of Sister Act at the London Palladium. One of many successful films-turned-stage-musical, Sister Act will be joined by another popular star of the silver screen next year, as Shrek the Musical takes over from Oliver! for its UK debut.

Those with a more classical taste in musicals will find many of the old favourites respectfully resurrected this year as well, most notably Claude-Michel Schnberg's genre-defining Les Miserables, which will be performed in a number of venues this October to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In addition to its continuing run at Queen's Theatre on London's famous Shaftesbury Avenue, there will be a special one-off performance at the O2 Arena in London's Docklands area, the perfect chance for fans old and new to see the classic musical in London's biggest venue.

Whatever you're looking to stay close to the West End or you want convenient access to the O2 and other venues across the city, you can find cheap hotels in London throughout the summer.
