Why do so many people feel drawn to Greece and long to travel there? Why do we hear so many stories about people who feel at home once they get there, and through the sights, sounds and experiences of this country, develop a deeper appreciation of the beauty of life? Here is a short list of some of the reasons why everyone loves Greece. 1. The History There is something very special about travelling back to the birthplace of modern civilization, knowing that people have lived there for thousands of years, and developed many of the thoughts, ideologies, traditions, and inventions that shape our world today. The great philosophies of Plato, the structure of democracy, and the tradition of the Olympics, all began here. For the history buff there are endless ancient ruins to discover, such as the Acropolis, Delphi and the site of the ancient Olympic Games at Olympia. Greece is the perfect place to take a step back in time and learn about people who lived long ago. 2. The Food The cuisine in Greece is typically Mediterranean, and it shares some of the ingredients and techniques of neighbouring countries such as Italy, the Balkans, Turkey and the Levant. It is very traditional, and it is actually very healthy while still being flavourful and varied. Because of the abundance of olive trees in the region, Greek cooking uses a lot of olive oil, which has been linked to longevity. Other ingredients are vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, poultry, rabbit and pork. Feta cheese, a salty cheese often made from goat's milk is commonly used. The flavours and ingredients change with the season, and most Greek food is prepared fresh. The best thing about Greek food however, is the tradition of long and leisurely meals eaten with family and friends. Delicious food is paired with fine wine and engaging conversation to create a dining experience that can last all afternoon or well into the night. In Greece, eating and drinking is a way of life. 3. The Sunshine Greece is known for its warm and sunny Mediterranean climate. There is an average of 2756 hours of sunlight per year in Greece, and the average temperature is 18.3 degrees Celsius. There are a few different climatic regions in Greece, with the Northern climate being more similar to the Balkans, and the Attica Peninsula, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete and the central and eastern Peloponnese enjoying hot, dry summers and mild winters. It is a great place for relaxing on the beach and forgetting all about the cold and snowy winter back home! These are only three out of the hundreds of reasons why Greece is loved by many travellers the world over. But why not make your own list and see for yourself?
