Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens didn't have many problems dominating Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins last season. Montreal (9-5-1) won five of six meetings with the Bruins (8-3-1) last season, including all three matchups at TD Garden to improve to 14-5-2 there over the last six regular seasons.Price has played well in 13 career games versus the Bruins, going 9-2-2 with a 2.39 goals-against average while posting a 5-1-1 mark on the road.
He beat the Northeast Division rivals all three times he faced them last season, compiling a 0.97 GAA and .971 save percentage.That may continue with Price coming off one of his best performances of the season Tuesday, making 34 saves in a 2-0 win over high-scoring Vancouver for his second shutout."He was unbelievable," said defenseman Andrei Markov, who netted his first goal of the season. "He kept us in the game and he made a few unbelievable saves."Montreal, 5-2-0 on the road, may be in for a tough matchup after Boston scored five unanswered goals in the third period and Thomas made a season-high 42 saves in a 7-4 win at Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
"Obviously, ideally we don't want to put ourselves in the situations where we've got to come back like that," Thomas said. "But if we're in (that situation) we know we're not out of it."The Bruins have posted two shutouts while winning four of six, and have allowed an Eastern Conference-low 24 goals this season in large part due to Thomas.He will likely be back in goal looking to improve upon his franchise record of eight consecutive winning decisions to start a season. Thomas has a 1.39 GAA in nine games in 2010-11, but is 2-4-1 with a 3.25 GAA in his last seven home meetings with Montreal.
Backup Tuukka Rask is 0-2-1 with a 3.24 GAA against the Canadiens at TD Garden.Nathan Horton will get his first taste of the Original Six rivalry after joining Boston in a three-player trade from Florida in the offseason. The right wing leads the team with seven goals and 13 points, and has five points in his last five games against the Canadiens.Andrei Kostitsyn, Montreal's leader with six goals, might be looking forward to a meeting with Boston as he tries to end to his six-game points drought. He has failed to muster a shot in two games.The left wing has seven goals and 13 assists in 21 career matchups with the Bruins while getting 10 points in the last 10 visits to Boston.
Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill is familiar with the intensity of the rivalry since he spent his first eight NHL seasons with the hometown Bruins."Thursday night is going to be a big game," Gill told the team's official website. "They're a great team and they've been playing well. I think the rivalry between the two teams is still very present so we're looking forward to a good battle for sure."
