Facing the Detroit Red Wings may seem like a mismatch for the last-place Edmonton Oilers. Playing them on the road could be an even greater task to overcome.The Oilers visit the surging Red Wings on Thursday night having lost 27 of 31 away from Rexall Place and nine of 11 overall.Edmonton has won two road games in regulation -- both against Chicago on Oct. 29 and Sunday -- dating to Dec. 23. Those victories also are the only two for the Oilers during a 2-7-2 stretch since starting the season 2-0-0.Edmonton lost 7-1 to Carolina on Tuesday in the second of a five-game road trip. Coach Tom Renney benched standout rookies Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle for most of the third period, and Nikolai Khabibulin was pulled after giving up four goals on eight shots.
"I don't know what to say," Khabibulin said. "We definitely didn't play our best game. We had an awful start for whatever reason, I cannot even name it."Carolina scored two goals in the opening 75 seconds and Edmonton never recovered. Dustin Penner scored his team-leading fifth goal in the third period after the Oilers had fallen behind 6-0."They got a few goals early, and we didn't play our game from then on," Hall said. "We obviously need to play better."Hall and Eberle have combined for one goal over their last four games."Hockey is a game where fortunately I'll have another opportunity in a couple nights," Hall said. "Hopefully I'll do better and stay on the ice."
Things may not get any easier against Detroit (9-3-1), which has won four of five and is coming off a 3-2 overtime victory against Phoenix on Monday.Henrik Zetterberg scored his fourth goal and first in six games 1:23 into overtime, helping the Red Wings improve to 5-1-1 at Joe Louis Arena. It was Detroit's first game at home after a three-game trip through western Canada."We know this game is a tough one, both in the legs and mentally," Zetterberg said. "We knew it was not going to be a beautiful win if we were going to get the 'W'. It was a pretty ugly one."
Nicklas Lidstrom also scored, and Pavel Datsyuk added an assist as each extended their point streak to nine games.Jimmy Howard made 29 saves and improved to 7-1-1 with a 2.29 goals-against average. He has won his last two starts against Edmonton after starting 0-1-2 versus the Oilers.This will be the second meeting between these teams in the past week. The Red Wings won 3-1 in Edmonton on Friday behind goals from Justin Abdelkader, Valtteri Filppula and Dan Cleary. Howard made 29 saves and Khabibulin stopped 27 shots.Hall scored the Oilers' goal.
