Basilica Of Bom Jesus, A Historical Masterpiece

Goa, Indias smallest state has a rich heritage stretching back several centuries. Situated on the west coast of India, Goa possesses many attractions which lure a large number of foreign visitors each year. With many historic places of worship, imposing architectural highlights and pristine beaches, Goa is a prime tourist destination. It also boasts a wide variety of flora and fauna, and is recognized as a biodiversity centre.

Goa is thought to have been founded by Buddhist monks at the time of the Mauryan Empire in the third century BC. The area was controlled by a succession of Indian monarchies and came under the control of the Portuguese in 1510 and became a part of independent India in 1961.

One of Goas most celebrated attractions is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Bom Jesus is a Portuguese term meaning Good or Holy Jesus and is used to refer to the infant Jesus. The church was consecrated in 1605, and is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Baroque style of architecture in India.

The Basilica is recognized as a landmark in Christian history. It contains the remains of St. Francis Xavier, one of the founders of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. The saint is reputed to have had amazing healing powers, and his remains are said to retain this power. Accordingly the Basilica attracts a vast number of devotees from all over India and abroad.

With magnificent gilded altars and inlaid with precious stones, the church is tastefully appointed with paintings depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The carpeted marble floor enhances the simple but elegant theme of the Basilica.

The body of St. Francis Xavier rests in a silver casket which is placed on a mausoleum designed by Giovanni Battista Foggini, a Florentine sculptor of the 17th century. The mausoleum took no less than ten years to complete. Located on the upper level is the Bom Jesus Basilica Art Gallery which displays the creations of Dom Martin, a Goan surrealist painter.
