subject: Sinus Medication Topical Therapy The Ultimate Sinus Treatment Option [print this page]

Over 30 million Americans suffer from the symptoms of sinusitis every year. It ranks high among the top causes of clinical visitations as well as treatment in the United States. More than the statistics are the effects sinusitis has on the lives of those who are affected by it. Patients are usually less productive than healthier people and over all very much debilitated by simple symptoms like low-grade headache and nasal congestion.

Usual Sinus Therapies

Under normal circumstances, treatments for sinusitis include first-line defense therapies such as nasal irrigation with saline solution, application of warm compress and humidification. Patients who exhibit more severe symptoms are often provided with rounds of antibiotics, if the cause of sinus infection is bacteria. If the cause is fungus or allergen, antifungal or antihistamine medications are often advised. For more serious cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to bring about permanent relief. However, this does not always guarantee a permanent cure.

But management of sinusitis has never been so easy. Of late, different medical groups are introducing a new family of therapy for sinusitis called the sinus medication topical therapy. This mostly includes therapies that use other routes of drug administration which are tested to be more effective than systemic or oral administration. It makes perfect sense that topical solutions are emerging as the new treatment options for sinusitis as these make delivery of medication to the targeted site faster and easier.

Sinus Medication Topical Therapy

With this new treatment method, drugs are no longer absorbed by the body and delivered to the sinus cavities via the bloodstream. Instead, these drugs are inhaled and delivered directly to the inflamed membranes of the sinuses. This process causes sinusitis symptoms to subside immediately after treatment is delivered.

This option is not desirable only because it brings immediate effect. According to the studies which either tried to establish or debunk the claims of the manufacturers of aerosolized medicine for sinusitis, nebulized medications bring longer symptom-free periods to those who use it. What is more desirable about this new treatment method is that there are only a few side effects that may be associated with the use of nebulized medicines. But even these are only assumed in theory. The clinical studies that have dealt with the efficacy of nebulized sinus medications have found only a slight possibility that this could, indeed, cause side effects similar with standard medications for sinusitis to appear.

Topical Therapy Benefits

Topical therapy for sinusitis is also proving to replace other standard treatment options for sinusitis. With its capacity to work in conjunction with other treatment methods like surgery and its capability to deliver treatment as a stand-alone option, it is being seen as the ultimate method for providing relief to sinusitis patients.

Sinus medication topical therapy is also relatively less expensive than standard methods of treatment. Whereas endoscopic sinus surgery comes in at several thousand dollars, topical therapies only cost a few hundred.

Overall, sinus medication topical therapy is starting to provide patients with a good alternative to most types of sinusitis treatment methods.
