The New York Rangers have had a tough time on home ice early this season, but a visit from the Edmonton Oilers could help them out.The Oilers will try and avoid their second four-game road losing streak when coach Tom Renney makes his return to Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon.Marian Gaborik, who led the Rangers with 42 goals and 44 assists last season, made his much-anticipated return on Thursday night after missing 12 games with a separated shoulder.Gaborik failed to record a point, but his presence alone was enough to lead New York to a 3-2 overtime win against Buffalo.
"Its the talent level that he brings," said coach John Tortorella. "He's dynamic, and he's going to make other people better too. It's good to have him back."Ruslan Fedotenko gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead and Artem Anisimov scored a second-period goal then added another in overtime as New York (8-7-1) improved to 3-5-1 at home.Anisimov recorded his third multi-point effort over the last six games.Martin Biron made 29 saves in a surprise start against the Sabres after Henrik Lundqvist was diagnosed with flu-like symptoms. "We've been struggling in our building, so it's a huge win," said Gaborik, who recorded both a goal and an assist in his last two meetings with the Oilers.
The Rangers are hoping that Lundqvist, who has two shutouts in his last five games, is healthy enough to play Sunday. He is 1-0-2 with a 2.54 goals-against average all-time against Edmonton while Biron is 0-5-0 with a 3.72 GAA.Renney, who led the Rangers to the postseason in each of his three full seasons with the team before he was fired in 2008-09, is looking to conclude the Oilers' five-game road trip with a victory and isn't concerned about the off-the-ice drama."What we want (our players) to do is go in and enjoy it; drink it up and have a hell of a time," he said. "For myself, it's all about the Edmonton Oilers and trying to go in there and steal two points."The Oilers (4-8-3) continued their road struggles with a 4-3 overtime loss to New Jersey on Friday. Colin Fraser scored twice in the first 10 minutes, but Edmonton was shut out the rest of the way after Sam Gagner extended the visitors' lead to 3-1 early in the second period.
The loss dropped the Oilers to 2-4-3 on the road with both wins coming at Chicago. Edmonton is 4-24-5 away from home since winning five straight road games in December.With Devan Dubnyk starting against New Jersey, Nikolai Khabibulin figures to be back in net Sunday. Khabibulin is 1-4-0 with a 4.15 goals against average over his last five games and is 2-5-0 with a 2.42 GAA lifetime at Madison Square Garden.The Oilers defeated Renney's Rangers 3-2 in their last visit to New York on Nov. 10, 2008.
