Things You Need To Know About Stuttering Kids

Every person undergoes the stages of verbal development. But when the person does not outgrow this or does not fully develop in speech, then he or she will definitely have a problem later on. It is a known fact that stuttering can be detected through early childhood. It is in the ages between 2 years old and 4 years old that stuttering kids begin showing signs of interrupted speech. It is important to detect this early on so you can do something about it.

Stuttering may be characterized in four different signs that a child exhibits when he or she is trying to say something. One of the signs is by repeating sounds before continuing a sentence. The child may also constant repeat words at the beginning of a phrase or half way through his or her statement. Stuttering is also characterized in prolonging certain sounds as well as involuntary pauses while talking. These four signs will tell you that this condition should have ample treatment to prevent this from going worse.

The best thing you can do as parents and adults in this situation is to be the childs support group. Embarrassing the child by laughing at him or her will not help improve the situation. You must also avoid making jokes about this condition or let others talk to your child in a manner that will demean the childs confidence in speaking. As much as possible try to encourage the child to speak up even if this may prove to be difficult at first. You will see marked improvement as you do so.

You must also be patient in teaching the child how to speak. Some parents help their stuttering kids by having them recite Dr. Seuss nursery rhymes. These rhymes are fun, easy and enjoyable reads for children and will help them relax as well as concentrate in what they are doing. If your child is just beginning how to read, then the best thing to do is to model this for your child so he or she can follow your example. Begin with a word per word reading. Read each word and ask your child to repeat it after you. As you progress to the following days, increase the level of difficulty by reading one whole line at a time and have the child repeat after you. Then as you progress even more, read the entire stanza and have the child speak it on his or her own.

This may seem like a simple activity to a normal-speaking adult such as yourself, but it is a complicated for a child who stutters. You have to remember that stuttering is a speech disorder that cant be cured overnight. You have to constantly practice your child and help him or her feel at ease in speaking out the words and fully expressing themselves.

If you have childrens audiotapes like the reading of Aesops Fables at home, you can have your children listen to this to improve his or her speech. This is a good auditory exercise that can help your child improve his or her speech patterns even while you are busy.

Take note of these causes, explanations and suggestions for stuttering kids and let these help you deal with your childs condition.
