Facts about Eindhoven

Located in the province of Noord-Brabant in the south Netherlands, Eindhoven is a vibrant, modern city with a population in excess of 212,000. Built at the meeting point of the Dommel and Gender streams (the Dommel still runs through the centre of Eindhoven), like many river settlements it has a long history, with written records dating back to 1232.

From a small mediaeval village, Eindhoven expanded to become an important town. However, it has a chequered and bloodied history, with fortifications, castles and other monuments constantly being plundered, destroyed and rebuilt right up to WWll. Eindhoven's modern success largely stems from the late industrial revolution, and the rise of electric lighting. Electronics giant Philips was founded here in 1891, following which Eindhoven grew to become one of the leading cities for science and technology in the world. Christened the "City of Light", it is still the home of the Philips Design Bureau.

Eindhoven today

In the early 20th century, Eindhoven was a pleasingly aesthetic blend of old and new. However, much of the city was destroyed in the Second World War, and a massive redevelopment plan in the 1960s largely finished what the allied bombing forces had started. However, several examples of Eindhoven's industrial heritage have been renovated. This includes two Philips buildings: the Witte Dame (White Lady) lamp factory, which today houses the Design Academy, a shopping mall and library, and the smaller Roze (Pink) Baby, which was Philips' first light bulb factory and now houses the Philips museum and Kunstlicht artistic light centre. The nearby Admirant building was once the company's main offices.

Today, there is a vital need for state-of-the-art conference facilities, like ours at Holiday Inn Eindhoven. The city continues to be a major technological hub, with over a third of the total research budget of the Netherlands spent in this area. 25% of all jobs in Eindhoven are in the technology and ICT. This is reflected in futuristic buildings like the UFO-styled Evoluon centre, just one of many constructions which have led to Eindhoven becoming known as the capital of Dutch industrial design. In 2003 the Design Academy was christened "School of Cool" by Time Magazine.

We at Holiday Inn Eindhoven reflect the city itself: modern, dynamic and cutting-edge, but with a friendly personal service. With Wi-Fi and natural light in all rooms, high-tech business equipment, a personal Meetings Host and numerous other personal touches, we at Holiday Inn Eindhoven ensure your meeting will be a success.
