Ways To Get Kids To Eat Fresh Vegetables

Is there a vegetable phobia loose in your house? Does your child refuse to eat their greens, preferring junk food instead? This is nothing new, because all of us as children resisted eating the likes of spinach and cabbage.

As a parent we can get quite angry with our children because we know fresh vegetables are a very important source of minerals and vitamins. We also know they don't make you fat. The big question remains, and that is what is it that children have against green vegetables?

There is a theory that children don't like the colour green, because most of the vegetables they won't touch are green. By that I mean cabbage, peas, broad beans, and spinach. It could be the taste, but they never usually allow you to put a spoon to their mouths, so how can they know?

If your children don't eat their veggies is it perhaps that we don't set them a very good example. ask yourself the question, which is do you eat all the vegetables you expect your children to eat? perhaps you leave them off your plate, and your children copy you. They may even hear you say something about you don't like spinach!!

Sometimes I wonder if it is the jars of processed baby food that are to blame. They are frequently a greenish colour, and I don't know whether or not you have tasted them, but they are not great. If the baby becomes a child who associates green vegetables with the colour and the taste, then no wonder they are put off.

So what can we as parents do. The first thing is to buy a food processor, and from day one prepare fresh fruit and vegetables. It's cheaper, better for the child, and more flavoursome. This will start to establish good eating habits early, and reduce the number of chemical additives as well.

In closing, this does of course all comes down to the lead that you as a parent give. You eat junk, they will eat junk, you eat fresh vegetables, they will eat fresh vegetables. make meal times fun, with you the parent tucking into the same food as your child, and ensure your plate ends up empty!!
