Grootbos Nature Reserve In South Africa

Less than two hours drive from Cape Town the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

With sweeping views of the Walker Bay this nature lover's paradise that is 2,500 acres of indigenous bush bursts with flourishing flora and fauna earning it the name South Africa's garden of Eden.

The large private cottages and secluded balconies in the Grootbos Nature Reserve allow you to watch the sun setting over the ocean. The cottages are set amongst ancient milkwood trees and you awaken to the calls of forest birds. Each of the suites is furnished with rich textures, romantic canopy beds draped with the finest linen and soft quilts. The en-suite bathrooms are spacious tiled and bright, and the separate lounges enjoy cosy fireplaces and mini bars.

The main lodge consists of a restaurant, bar, comfortable lounge area, open gallery, a refreshing infinity pool and a meeting centre as well as the sixteen luxurious, freestanding bedroom suites built on the edge of the lush forest. The reserve suites have volumes of space which framed by glass seem to stretch into the outside views. The structure is of steel and natural brick and the design of each room maximizes the impressive views across the fynbos and dunes right down to the ocean. Your bedroom suite at Grootbos will have its own private verranda where you can gaze into the distant ocean and mountain views before watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic Ocean.

During whale season (July to November), the cliffs of Walker Bay offer the some of the best land based whale watching in the world. The huge Southern Right Whales come here to calve, court and play in the breakers just a few metres off the shore. For those wanting to get a little closer there are boat trips which often include sightings of large sea bird colonies and Cape fur seals.

Grootbos is all about lung fulls of fresh air and nature running wild, with a sophisticated slant added to the accommodation. Grootbos is the place of lazy picnics on empty beaches and wandering lazily amongst wild flowers with the sun on your back. The hosts at Grootbos are very knowledgeable, often with an 'ology' to their name; and they can answer any question you might have. Even if you are sitting with a glass of wine gazing at the deep dark star lit sky your hosts will be able to answer your questions and point out any constellations.

Families are attracted to the classic Garden Lodge, whilst couples seem to like the new, contemporary Forest Lodge. Here you can either get up with the sun and watch it's rays creep across the bay or lounge in bed gazing out the window into the ancient milkwood forest whilst deciding what to do with your day.

Cuisine at both lodges is equally unsurpassed. Culinary preparation is done with creative precision, and oh, so appealing to the senses. Each entree presents with its own personality of colors, presentation and divine flavor and aroma. Dessert? Indulge, for these are some of the finest!
