Research The Opportunities Within The London Fashion Industry

The glamour of the fashion industry is more than fascinating. London has been one of the world's fashion capitals for quite a long time now. You can certainly expect to find plenty of appealing job opportunities in this sector.

The recent economic difficulties have taken a toll on every aspect of the economy and the fashion industry has also suffered as a result. However, that factor should not discourage those who are aspiring for a career in the industry, since as the economy has started to gain health again, so are the job opportunities.

But for those who are really working hard for a career in the fashion industry, there are a number of roles they can take up in the industry. Of course, there is always a demand for a fashion stylist in the job market, while apart from that you can always find your way into the media covering the fashion industry, such as working for a fashion magazine.

In order to secure such a position, you need to have a taste for clothes, accessories and makeup, but this is usually not sufficient. You have to have excellent interpersonal skills and network with a lot of people.

You have to have organizational and managerial skills in order to get the best buys on the market. Generally, applicants are not required to have a degree in higher education, but in most cases this is certainly a great advantage.

Probably the most exciting role in the fashion industry is that of the predictors, the pundits who forecast the trends to come in the industry. Usually this function is performed by companies dedicated to this sole purpose, which are independent of the mainstream fashion circles. The involvement of the predictors is increasing with every passing day.

But while forecasting may sound a little superficial to you, it is anything but. This is a position which requires a lot of homework and analytical skills, and those having good knowledge and experience of the industry and retail markets are selected for the purpose. It also involves great responsibility to report as close to the right market trends and demand that are about to surface as possible. Mostly, such a position requires you to have a higher education degree.

The most popular jobs in the London fashion industry are the ones of designers. You know that a designer has to create clothing and in some cases accessories. However, there is much more to this job.

You have to have excellent understanding of all elements of design. You will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing the trends in the industry and the demand in the retail sector. You will also plan the collections and oversee their production. In many cases, the designers are responsible for the marketing of their creations.

Once you set your mind on becoming a designer, there are three further paths to take for your career. You can either step into the Haute Couture market or start working with designer houses offering ready-to-wear collections to their customers. But the third option of high street fashion holds the largest number of job opportunities for emerging designers.

You are required to have a graduate degree in order to become designer. It is best if you have a degree in fashion design, graphic design or in art and design. Any kind of experience, even in retail, is highly valued. You will also be expected to show a portfolio with your sketches.

There is one important thing you have to know about the fashion industry. The best way to enter is through networking. Make and use as many contacts as possible. It is definitely worth making speculative applications for fashion jobs.
