How To Buy The Perfect Pepper Mill

Pepper mills are tools that are used to convert pepper corns into powdered pepper form. This device is a form of burr grinder or burr mill which is used to grind small and hard food items between a couple of abrasive surfaces that revolve against each other. The distance between the two surfaces are often separated as preferred by the user. The nearer the distance is, the finer the pepper powder becomes.

There are many kinds of pepper mills available in the market today. Usually, a pepper mill includes a screw that revolves when used and pushes the powdered pepper through the opening. The mills that are available today are either powered manually or electrically usually with batteries.

Pepper mills are different from other devices that process food. Other grinders pulverize food items by slicing food repeatedly with blades to produce smaller bits of the food item. The particles of the pepper that are produced by the mill are quite consistent in terms of size. The size and consistency are accurately determined by the distance between the two grinding surfaces.

The particle size of the powdered pepper is better when uniform because it is more suitable for use in specific cases of food preparation. When used as a seasoning during meals, it is best that the powdered pepper is as fine as possible to make the seasoning blend easier and faster to the food.

There are many factors which should help you decide whether to get a manually operated pepper mill or one of the electronic types. If you consistently and regularly use pepper corns and require them to be in powdered form, it may be wiser to go for the electronic types. The electronically operated mills are usually operated by batteries and are easier and faster to use.

While battery operated mills are convenient, they can also be quite hard to disassemble when there is a need for you to switch to newer batteries. Before purchasing, make sure that you ask for a demonstration on how to change the batteries of the device. If you find it too complicated or too time-consuming, you can look for another model or simply switch to the manually operated pepper mill.

Manually operated mills are turned by hand. The user rotates one grinding surface against the other and produces the powdered form which goes through the opening at the other end of the device. The best type of manually-operated mills are those that have a handle of the appropriate size and provide leverage for the multiple turns that are required to grind the right amount of pepper.

There are also manually-operated mills that do not have a handle. They are usually rotated using the entire top of the device. This is less convenient compared to using the handle bar but is more efficient in that only a few turns are required to produce enough amount of powdered pepper. The mill usually has no container and the powdered product falls directly into the meal being seasoned or the food being prepared.
