subject: Money Saving Reception Ideas [print this page]

Planning a wedding reception can be an expensive pursuit. Not all of us were born with a silver spoon but there is no reason why a stringent budget should stop you from planning a memorable event. The more practical souls see the wedding reception as an utter waste of money, whereas the more romantic ones need to constantly put a brake on their enthusiasm so that it doesn't end up ruining them. If you're just dying to have a reception but can hardly afford one, the following ideas may help you achieve it.

One great way to avoid too much stress on your budget as well as your guests' is to hold a potluck reception. You won't have to worry about the food and making up a wedding menu, and your guests won't have to worry about a present for you, instead they'll bring along their own wedding menu. If by any chance you think such a reception embarrassing, banish the thought and rest assured that it is a most traditional celebration of a wedding. And just consider the variety of food choices your guests will have with a potluck wedding 'menu', which otherwise would be rather limited.

Appetizer Reception: This is a party where the menu comprises of finger foods and may also include cocktails. The wedding menu expenses will drop considerably low as many who have chosen this type of reception have found out. You can plan an appetizing and elegant spread at a really low cost. Beverages like beer, wine and soda should not be absent, of course, and fruits, cheese and a vegetable platter would go great as well. You could also include chicken hors d'oeuvres. Try not to use sea food or beef in the dishes because this will just raise the cost.

You must be aware by now that hardly any of the old traditions are being used these days at special occasions, being replaced instead with new customs to suit the newer times and tastes. Even though a cash bar is a highly controversial practice that may lead to a lot of unhappy mumbling from the guests, nobody can deny that it is a wonderful way to save money. You will spend the majority of your food budget on the alcohol so opting for a cash bar where the guests have to pay for the drinks will eliminate this expenditure. This idea doesn't sit well with people generally, so what you can do to appease your conscience and their spirits is to send them tickets for a couple of drinks, and if they want to consume more you can then easily show them the way to the cash bar. Choosing this alternative you can be sure that you're not being inconsiderate to your guests and that your wedding costs are down to a minimum.

If you want to lower the costs of your wedding even more, you could take a look at your decoration budget and see that with but a few balloons here and there, some inexpensive candles and a flower of your choice set at every table, you can fashion a simple yet stylish effect for your reception.
