subject: Gold Rush Investing For Iras [print this page]

One great way to save for retirement is with a self directed IRA. This IRA is so great because it gives individuals the control over their retirement account. This way they can choose to do risky or conservative investments in their portfolio.

Another thing that is involved with a self directed IRA is a custodian. A custodian is a person that manages the IRA. He or she files paperwork and executes what the investor would have them do.

There are so many different things to invest in with an IRA. There are the traditional forms like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. There are other forms to invest in as well.

Gold is an investing option that is gaining in popularity. It is gaining so quickly it is almost like a gold rush. The value of gold has been brought back to people's attention and they want to invest their retirement in it.

Gold is something that will always be of value and can be considered a safe investment. There are stipulations with investing in gold though. Not every coin will be of qualified value to consider it as a self directed IRA investment.

Originally the IRS did not include gold coins as a form that could be invested in, but Congress changed it. Now the gold should not be considered a collectible or decorative piece of art. It is an investment.

Once the gold is bought as an investment in the IRA, and then the investor should not have it personally. The gold bar or coin needs to be held some place other than the investor's home. It is generally held by the custodian or in a depository.

The gold coin generally needs to be of .995+ note. Some examples of gold coins that can be an investment are American Gold Eagles coins, American Gold Buffalo coins, Australian Nugget (Kangaroo) Gold coins, Austrian Philharmonic Gold coins, and Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins. If investors are ever in doubt about a coin being an investment, they should ask their custodian.
