Shuishang Park, A Rejuvenating Sojourn

Tianjin is a major city in the Peoples Republic of China, sixth largest in population and fifth in urban land area. Formerly known as Zhigu Tianjin gained its present name the heavenly ford in Chinese in 1404 from the Yongle Emperor (the son of heaven), who had forded the river at the site. In later years Tianjin became a focal point in the colonial era, with several western powers vying for influence in the area. The city was also the site of many military clashes and was occupied by the Japanese during World War II. Today Tianjin is a rapidly developing city, and attracts many visitors drawn by the citys sightseeing opportunities and colonial era architecture.

Shuishang Park is Tianjins largest park, and undoubtedly one of the citys foremost attractions, providing a majestic view of the surrounding landscape. Known for its unparalleled scenic beauty, it is difficult to believe that it was once a brick-making site. The park is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll amidst the tranquil and refreshing scenery.

The park consists of three lakes, East, West and South, where the visitor can relax while floating in a rented rowboat. East Lake contains 13 islets which are connected by pedestrian arch bridges, each islet featuring elaborate towers and pavilions. Lotus flowers beautify the waters and picturesque weeping willows fringe the lakeside, creating lovely waterscapes that form the most prominent images of the park, and probably the principal reason for its popularity.

Shuishang Water Park also features several rides, open during the weekends that will attract the young and young at heart, including notably the parks Ferris wheel, a thrilling ride which provides a sensational view of the surrounding landscape. Additionally a small tower situated at the centre of the park provides a panoramic view of the area.

There is also a large zoo that contains almost 200 species of wildlife, including rare animals such as giant pandas.
