North American Kayak Fishing Techniques

Some of the best kayak fishing in North America occurs in small farm ponds or brackish rivers and creeks. These quiet waterways provide essential habitat where anglers catch largemouth bass and northern pike.

Tackle and techniques for kayak fishing varies with season, time of day, water temperatures, tides, water clarity, sunlight, barometric pressure and other factors. As with nearly all freshwater fishing, structure is critical.

Common freshwater structure includes lily pads, downed trees, overhanging brush, man made structures (docks, piers, etc.), freshwater springs, small creeks, channel edges, flats, shallows and other areas.

Lure selection is important for success in smaller lakes, reservoirs, ponds and rivers. Popular tackle includes a few classic lures as well as state of the art rigs. Common lures for kayak fishing in include buzz baits, surface plugs, crank baits, jerk baits, texas rigs, jigs, spinner baits and others.

Most lakes and rivers of the region have kayak access including boat ramps, public piers or bulkheads. Many of these waterways can be accessed thru state parks. Larger stretches of rivers are best fished along shorelines while small bodies of water can be explored completely by kayak or canoe.

Taking a trip with a local guide is an excellent way to enjoy these fisheries. USA fishing guides fish often and know the best locations and times to target fish by kayak. Specialized kayak fishing guides provide a wide range of trips for largemouth bass, sunfish and other species.
