Auto Industry Registers Highest Ever Monthly Sales In July 2010

The Indian automobile industry has reported its best ever performance in its monthly sales of two-wheelers and passenger cars by selling as many as 12,37,461 units in the month of July 2010. The previous peak in monthly sales was achieved in the month of March this year. As per the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday, the total passenger cars and two-wheeler sales stood at 12,37,461 units as compare to 9,41,070 units sold in the same month last year, accounting a growth of 31.50 percent.

As per a statement given by SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur to the reporters, the growth in the automobile industry during July was mainly due to good growth in the passenger car segment, scooters and mopeds as new model launches, penetration into rural markets and availability of finances continue to boost sales. According to him the previous best ever sales was registered in the last month of last fiscal.

The total passenger car sales stood at 1,58,764 units in the month of July 2010 as against sales of 1,15,084 units in July 2009. The total growth in the passenger car sales was 37.95 per cent during the month. The total sales was 1,15,084 units in the month of March.

Where India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki registered a domestic sales growth of 26.83 per cent to 76,111 units in July, its closest rival Hyundai Motor India registered a 24.22 per cent growth at 28,811 units. At the same time the sales of Tata Motors increased by 69.31 per cent to 24,613 units during this month.

The total growth in the two-wheeler segment was 30.41 per cent during the month over the same period last year.
