How To Wear Striped Ties

Next to solid color ties, striped ties are the ones to go for first time ties users. They complement solid color shirts well and they always give a sophisticated look.

Do Buy Striped Ties of Red Hues

Don't worry about the original color combination. A tie can be dark green, purple and thin yellow stripes and still give you a reddish flash. Take several steps back and look what color the combinations of stripes give you. If they give you anything reddish, go for it. Chances are your shirts are of white color or blue tones and red hued ties look good with these colors.

Don't Go with Too Thick Stripes
How To Wear Striped Ties

The thinner the stripes the more elegant a tie looks. Half a centimeter is the limit. And by all means, never by a tie with thick and thick stripes. Choose striped ties with thick and thin stripes instead.

Do Go Diagonal

Most striped ties come diagonal indeed but for the more adventurous souls out there, there are ties with horizontal stripes. If you really want to venture into the world of horizontal stripes, try the monochrome stripes first. Contrasting colors on horizontally striped ties can be disconcerting and end up looking comical.

Don't Contrast

As said before, contrasting colors on striped ties can be too distracting. Diagonal stripes help lessen this effect but the best thing to do is to choose contrasting colors which also alternates thickness.

Never go for contrasting colors with thick stripes. If you have to have that purple and yellow striped tie, at least make sure one of the color is thinly striped.

Don't Wear Striped Ties with Striped Shirts

At least make sure that one of them looks monochrome, or in other words, looks like a solid from afar. This means you can wear your burgundy, red and purple striped shirt with light blue, navy and yellow striped tie - because the shirt's stripes blend into a reddish color and can be combined with the bluish tie. White striped shirts are also safe to combine with striped tie but keep in mind that the stripes on the white shirts need to be thin as well.

Don't Wear Striped Ties with Patterned Shirts

Only designers and eccentric can pull this off. Even then they need to deliberate and consider at length.

Do Go Monochrome if You are Not Sure

Classic timeless look always agree with monochrome. Choose a thinly blue striped white shirt to go with a dark purple, purple and cobalt striped tie and pair the ensemble with a navy blazer and you can't go wrong.

Or else, wear a thinly striped dark grey shirt, pair it with silver and white striped tie under a charcoal blazer and there you have it.

Tip on Choosing a Striped Tie: There is a formula of color combination that never fails - go for three colors combination for ultimate sophistication. Have two shades of one color on it and thin stripes of a contrasting color. Example: Navy, cobalt and thin orange stripes; magenta, burgundy and thin yellow stripes or dark purple, purple and thin bright green.
