subject: Investing In Bullion [print this page]

The control over a self directed IRA is in the hands of the owner over the account. The owners get to decide which investments to participate in. To make these decisions, the owners need to have knowledge about the investment.

There are several different investment options in a self directed IRA as well. This has the benefit of a diverse portfolio, but more research for the investor. The different investing options go from stock and bonds to real estate and precious metals.

Several of the investment options in the IRA are common knowledge, but things like precious metals are not. Only individuals who work with precious metals really know about them. Investors must follow specific requirements if they want to invest in precious metals within their self directed IRA.

One requirement for precious metals is that they are in the form of coins or bullion. Not very many people know what a bullion is, but they need to if they are going to invest in precious metals. Hopefully after reading this article, investors will know what a bullion is.

A definition of bullion can be found in the Webster dictionary. In it says that bullion is precious metal that is either uncoined or coined. Most of the time the bullion is gold or silver.

Bullion is more rare and is not used for current trading coin. So it is not used like everyday money, but it can be used. Most people collect or invest in bullions and do not spend them.

The value of bullion does not lie in its form or shape. It is in the metal content in the bullion. Bullions are refined precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

Bullion coins are the same in the fact the value of them is not in the face value, but in the metal content or weight. The first bullion coin valued one ounce of gold. It was called the Krugerrand.
