Budget Travel For Seniors

Chances are, you're one of a large percentage of seniors who wants to do a bit of traveling during retirement. After all, isn't that one of the perks of giving up your day job for good? However, the economic crunch hasn't left you with that much to spare, as you still have to consider the rising costs of household expenses, capital for investments, and health care. If you really want a change of pace and scenery, you can go on vacation without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips on how you can do just that:

You don't need to check into a big-name hotel or resort to experience great board and lodging. Many booking websites rate accommodations within a range of one star to five. Five-star hotels may be the best, although even those that rank at three or two stars usually have much to offer the senior traveler. You'll spend less money, too.

Drive to your vacation spot if you can. Airplane tickets can be expensive, and take up a huge chunk of your travel budget. If you're driving, or having someone drive you there, take even the smallest expenses into account, as bag check fees, tips, food stops, and other costs can add up. You may be able to save up to thousands of dollars by driving compared to flying to your destination.

While traveling to a foreign country is a lot more exciting when you sample the local fare, you may not have enough cash to dine out at nice places thrice a day or more. Take advantage of your hotel or bed-and-breakfast's free buffets, or eat out for lunch rather than dinner.

Traveling on a budget doesn't necessarily equate to "roughing it" if you don't want to. Researching on relatively unknown yet great places to stay, driving to your destination instead of flying there, and eating out less can help you enjoy great retirement vacations without spending too much of your nest egg.
