Budget Holidays In Riga!

Riga is a fairly large city the places interesting to tourists are located around the monument of Freedom and Old town. The best way to see them is a walking tour. Begin with the House of Blackheads, the tourist office there offers free pamphlets with descriptions of many buildings and map for independent walk tours, alternatively a guided tour can be arranged. In case you want to get away from the touristy areas there tours on bike's and on foot arranged by private companies.

In the outskirts of Riga is located the Riga Ethnographic Open Air Museum, which features many traditional wooden Latvian country houses and traditional household things. The employees are often dressed in traditional Latvian costumes. The forest/park environment is a pleasant place to be after the hustles of Old Town and Riga city center. Occasionally during national celebrations the museum has special events. The less frequently visited areas by tourists are the Moscow Suburb (Maskavas forstate), Andrejsala and Pardaugava, though they are not popular tourist places it is well worth a visit.

Yet Rigas history is not its only attraction. Its reputation as the liveliest of the Baltic capitals is well deserved. Its bars and clubs are filled seven nights a week. Start your night at the eccentric Mi6 (Spy Bar) for its strong cocktails and Bond films. Then head to the Skyline Bar, where you can take in view from a window seat 26 floors up. For evening entertainment, head to Pulkvedim Neviens Neraksta. This nightclub provides edgy music on two levels without pretentious clientele or expensive entry.

The city has an excellent range of eating options for the budget traveller from bar snacks to restaurant blowouts. For good value cheap snacks, head to efpavirs Vilhelms, a self-service pancake place near Cathedral Square. For a more substantial meal, Melnie Miki offers a sophisticated global menu at reasonable prices which can be enjoyed in its atmospheric medieval interior.

Riga is a haven for backpackers with its vast range of youth hostels and budget hotels. This means that despite the large amount of accommodation on offer, it is essential to reserve in advance in summer.
