Dandruff or itchy scalp is the presence of small white flakes usually appearing on the scalp and the hair. Most commonly it is found in people between the ages of 12 and 80. There are two types of dandruff: dry type and greasy or waxy type.

The direct cause of dandruff is the excessive shedding of outermost cells. The indirect causes are poor blood circulation, lack of nerve stimulation, hormonal imbalance, too much heat, use of strong shampoo, inadequate rinsing of hair after shampooing, excessive perspiring, allergy, cold weather and dry environment, un-cleanliness, as well as insufficient nutrition and inadequate health conditions. Abundant use of hair-coloring products, electric hair curlers, gel and mousse, lack of sleep, stress, anxiety, tension and wrong food intake are other reasons for this condition. The best thing to stay away from dandruff is to keep the scalp clean, and perform oil massage two times in a week.

Dandruff Treatments

Using a mild shampoo is one of the options to get help some time. But you should give extreme care in choosing the shampoo. If you are using an antidandruff shampoo use a conditioning shampoo after that. If possible, utilize Selenium-based shampoo, since Selenium acts as an anti-fungal agent.

To lessen the flaking itchiness of the scalp, massage scalp with essential oils such as cedar, rosemary, eucalyptus and lemon.

Include raw food and green leafy vegetables in your diet. Keep away from fried foods and red meat. Trim down the consumption of chocolates, diary products and fatty food items.

Try to include food items containing Omega fatty acid, Vitamin B1 and B2, Vitamin A and Zinc in your diet as these help to reduce dandruff.
