The acronym ADHD will soon be changing to AD/HD. This will be in the new DSM edition soon to be published. The slight change in the acronym reflects current research and thinking. So attention deficit treatment will be referred to as AD treatment while hyperactivity disorder will be called HD. As ADHD was a slight misnomer for those who were not hyperactive or just mainly suffering from the Inattentive type, the new acronym will take care of that very nicely.

As attention deficit treatment is now such an important issue, there are heated arguments about how it should be managed. The alarming fact is that many children carry this into adulthood because it was never diagnosed or properly treated during their childhood. Worse, many of these adults never even realize that their multi tasking, lack of organizational skills is simply undiagnosed ADHD. The effect on relationships, work and careers is enormous.

When Melissa Orlov's book The ADHD Effect on Marriage - Understand and Rebuild Your Relationship in Six Steps , hits the bookshops any day now, it will be bound to cause a stir. Orlov tells the story of being married to a spouse with ADHD. She was infuriated because she could never rely on him. The distraction, forgetting, total lack of organization and all the failed promises had convinced her that these were symptoms of a lack of love, support or concern. Then she discovered that they were merely ADHD symptoms! Now her marriage is thriving. Maybe there is a lesson there for all of us.

Attention deficit treatment is enormously profitable for the manufacturers of the psychostimulant drugs which are modern medicine's way of coping with this condition. Unfortunately, while these drugs can help to alleviate symptoms for many people with ADHD, they will never properly cure it. There is the further problem that about 50% of adults with ADHD just do not respond to the psychostimulants. Also many of them are just not able to tolerate the side effects.

Possibly the best method for successful treatment for attention deficit disorder, is to take a course in CBT (cognitive behavior therapy), with or without medication. Results from one trial show that those doing the CBT with the aid of some medication actually showed marked improvement in ADHD symptoms than those on medication alone. More research needs to be done.

One established and well tested attention deficit treatment is that of using homeopathy. This has no side effects at all and many patients I know have been able to overcome their ADHD symptoms brilliantly.
