Purchasing Car Insurance – Tips

When purchasing insurance have you ever considered the level of care offered by the customer services department? The following scenario should highlight to you the importance of a well-run, efficient customer services department and its relation to you as a customer:

The following example happens fairly frequently, it is a common mistake, and you need to know how to protect yourself from such eventualities; picture the case, a driver is asked to pull over by the police, perhaps they were speeding? Or, perhaps it was simply a random stop-check. The police demand, as is law, that the driver produces their documents at their local police station within the next seven days. Upon reaching their home and finding the documentation, the person notes that their insurance policy has expired.

The insurance company have sent the renewal documents to the wrong address and the person whose insurance has lapsed is apoplectic with rage. Why should they be punished when the insurance company has failed to undertake the correct procedures regarding policy renewal? Surely, at the very least, the insurance company should have phoned to check that the person wanted to renew the policy?

The insurance company, on the other hand, argues that it is down to the individual, to which the policy belongs, to ensure they are covered. The renewal documents are a courtesy, not a requirement. How, then, can the uninsured person help his case with the police?

It is essential that a person knows when their policy is up for renewal, driving with no insurance means you risk being issued with a hefty fine, plus 6 points on your licence. Make sure that you keep a date of the expiration of your existing policy in a place that you check frequently.

Once you have paid for the renewed policy, double check with your insurers that the policy is currently in force. If you pay your car insurance by monthly instalment, make sure that the payment is taken every month if you notice that the payment is late, or appears not to have been taken, contact your insurers immediately. And, only insure with car insurance companies that have a good, solid, reputation within the industry.
