subject: Channel 4 Announce Paralympic Tv Coverage Schedule [print this page]

Today it has been announced that channel 4 has promised to make Paralympic athletes into household names during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Channel 4- the UK's official Paralympics covering channel, has promised to show at least 150 hours worth of coverage in the London games. A sum of money totalling 500,000 has been set aside to find and train people with disabilities in order to help them present the coverage during 2012.

Later this month channel four are also due to begin showing a series of programmes with the intention of raising the profiles of Paralympic athletes.

It has now been announced that a magazine show, ten weeks long in length, entitled, 'That Paralympics Show,' will be scheduled in during the London games in 2012. The show is to be covered by Rick Edwards and Paralympic wheelchair basketball medallist Ade Adepitan.

Adepitan has been quoted as saying that channel four has an 'edgy and fearless' approach to the Paralympic games which will hopefully help turn athletes into household names.

The acting chief creative officer of channel four, Julian Bellamy, has discussed the plans by saying, 'This is a big job to do. Research we have done... shows that 84% of the British public couldn't name a single British Paralympian - despite the fact Great Britain came second in the medals table at the Beijing Olympics.

It is vital that the medal winning Paralympic athletes of Great Britain become recognisable to the British public. As Julian Bellamy suggested - many of them were part of the 2nd place winning team of Beijing.

The 2012 Olympic games will see the channel providing coverage of the games for the first time, previously the BBC has covered the Olympics since back in 1980. Paralympic talent is definitely looking hopeful and Britain's medal hopefuls are certainly looking forward to the games in London.
