Speak Black Country Day

A Cradley Heath t-shirt company is helping organise 'Spake Black Country for a Day' festival.

TeeT Shirts, Reddal Hill Road, is hosting the festival on Saturday September 11 between 10am and 4pm.

As well as a celebration of the Black Country language, it will mark the companies 3 year anniversary.

The festival will also have a Mr and Mrs Black Country crowned. There will be a T-Shirt giveaway, FREE T-Shirt cakes and an opportunity to be in their next You Tube video, following thesuccess of 'The Black Country Alphabet' and 'The Black Country Christmas Song'.

Steve Pitts from TeeT Shirts said: "We will be attempting to get as many people as possible speaking more of the Black Country lingo for a day.

"We're going to be getting people down to our Black Country store to share their best bits of Black Country slang."

He added: "The idea came from a conversation on facebook, where someone was referred to as a 'tunky pig', being Black Country born & bred, I thought I knew all the local terms & words, but I didn't know this one which turned out to mean someone is a bit chubby.

"This got us thinking of how many other Black Country terms/words might be out there which we didn't know and the Black Country day is an opportunity to get them out of the woodwork and back into more everyday use.

"This is all in an attempt to keep our culture and dialect thriving, passing on a few forgotten and lesser known words to others."

The festival will continue every year aroundTeeT Shirtsanniversary.
