How To Buy The Right Size Duvet?

A duvet cover is used to cover a comforter to protect it as well as add decorative color or patterns onto a typically white comforter. In the United States consumers reference a comforter cover as a duvet. Whereas some parts of the world and in some English language uses a duvet is a comforter. So let's be clear and state that a duvet is a duvet cover which covers any use of the word. Duvet covers are also called duvet protectors.

Consumers like the idea of using a duvet cover because it allows seasonal changes to the look of your bed simply by changing the duvet cover. Most of the time a duvet is sold as a set and includes matching duvets. Duvets sets typically use a button closure near the foot of the bed and sometimes will have duvet ties. Duvet ties are pieces of fabric in the corners and side of a comforter which can be tied to duvet loops sewn onto a comforter. Generally speaking very few comforters come with duvet loops except those used by hotels or sold in specialty stores.

If consumer complaints about duvet covers were collected the chief complaint would be that a loose comforter in a duvet is not a good thing. Many times it is hard for consumers to know what size duvet cover to buy or in reverse what comforter to buy to stuff inside their existing duvet cover.

A practical rule of thumb is that in both measurements the width or the length you want to make sure the duvet is within plus or minus two inches of the comforter size. Preferably the comforter is slightly bigger than the duvet cover. For example if you have a Hotel Queen' size comforter which measures 90 x 90 the perfect size duvet cover would be 88 x 88 for a nice tight snug fit.

One thing which can impact how a duvet cover fits is the fabric choice used in the duvet. If the duvet set uses cotton then once it is washed it will shrink 3% to 5%. This means that in the case of a cotton fabric duvet, you can buy a bigger duvet cover then the comforter. If the fabric choice is polyester or a poly cotton blend then the fabric won't shrink much and won't impact how a duvet cover fits a comforter. A performance fabric like Tencel Lyocell makes an excellent choice for a duvet cover. Not only is Tencel Lyocell shrink resistant buy unlike polyester it feels silky to the touch and has amazing moisture wicking characteristics.

Normally when you buy a comforter in a store the store will also sell duvet covers but care should be taken to make sure the duvet cover will fit properly as mentioned above. Very seldom will an hourly associate at a store know the 2 inch rule of thumb for proper sizing so buying online at a specialty retailer is a great way to purchase exactly what you need.
