Fabric Crafts For Kids

With the summer holidays underway, arts and crafts projects can be a good way to keep children entertained on those rainy English summer afternoons! There are many arts and crafts projects that are popular with children, and fabric crafts can make a good project. There are many different fabric crafts which include both constructing and decorating items. If your child likes to make things, then sewing projects may be popular. For those who enjoy creating their own designs, there are hundreds of projects that can be completed with fabric paints and a plain fabric surface.

The range of fabric objects which can be decorated is very large, and items range from bags and caps to purses, cuddly toys and hand puppets. The type of items that you choose will depend on the child that you are buying arts and crafts supplies for. One good way to decorate fabric items is with specialist fabric paints. There are a wide variety of paints available, in bright bold colours and even with effects such as glitter or pearlised paints. These are available in pots and tubes, but many people prefer to use fabric paint pens. These either have fibre tips which release the paint, or are in the form of small tubes with precision nozzles to help create a thin line of paint. It is a good idea to search for fabric paints which are flexible when dry, particularly if they are going to be used on items such as bags and hand puppets which will need to be flexible.

Fabric paints are just one way to decorate items, and it may be worth buying a few more decorations to allow for greater personalisation. Felt is a good addition to any blank fabric surface, and if you choose a thin sheet of coloured felt it can be cut into any shape and stuck on with fabric glue. It may also be possible to buy pre-cut felt shapes, such as letters numbers and basic shapes such as hearts, triangles and stars. These can be a good way to allow children to personalise their school bag or pencil case, and should be easy to attach with fabric glue. Alternatively, they can be sewn on to some items with coloured threads. Some pre-cut shapes may have small holes around the edges to make sewing easier and guide children's stitches. It is even possible to find self-adhesive felt sheets, which have a sticky backing to peel off, making application quick, easy and glue-free!

Sequins can also be a colourful addition to fabric arts and crafts, and there are a variety of sizes, colours and shapes available. These can be fixed to any material with fabric glue, or alternatively they can be sewn on. Larger sequins may have larger holes which can make sewing easier, but most crafts glues should be flexible when dry, to allow fabric arts and crafts to be used every day. Fabric crafts are often practical rather than merely decorative and items can be used for school, home and play.
