Hyperactive Children - How Omega 3 Supplements May Help to Reduce Misbehavior and Hyperactivity

Can hyperactive children really benefit from taking Omega 3 and 6 supplements or the EFAs, as they are sometimes called? Well, I have just read a report of two recent clinical trials in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics which suggest that they really can make a difference.

The first trial was sponsored by the University of South Australia and a government body. This was the largest trial of its kind, involving 132 children with ADHD for a period of over seven months. They were divided into three groups. One group was given the Omega 3 and 6 supplements, the second one a general mix of vitamins and supplements and the third were given a placebo of palm oil capsules.

At the end of the trial all the hyperactive children who had been on the Omega 3 supplements were showing definite signs of improvement in their ADHD symptoms. There were less hyperactive, less distracted, concentrated better and were generally less inattentive than they had been seven months previously. The group of children on the multivitamins without the fatty acids were found to have shown no improvement at all.

The second trial involved the same Omega 3 supplements and they were given to a group of 117 children. This trial was sponsored by the University of Oxford and Durham County Council in the UK. At the end of this trial, over 40% of the hyperactive children had improved grades in their reading ability and in spelling.

These trials are very interesting and while not forming a very large body of evidence, they still contribute to the growing number of studies which indicate that EFAs are useful in improving cognitive function and keeping brains active and alert. There are many other health reasons for making sure that we get the right dose of these EFAs especially as regards the fact that about 60% of our brains are made from fat. Getting the balance of good and bad fats is obviously of prime importance.

So there you have it. One part of the ADHD jigsaw seems to be fitting into its place. But what about all the others? How can we make sure that our hyperactive children are taking the right medicine? We may be worried sick about giving them amphetamine like drugs just to calm them down. Surely there must be natural remedies like homeopathy which can do that?

Happily there are and I have built a website for you to help you with your learning curve. Why not click through and see how easy, safe and effective homeopathic remedies are for hyperactive children. It really is easier and cheaper than all the others.
