How to Encourage and Motivate Your Child - Tips for Parents

It is important to reward a child but also to keep a healthy balance and not over do it.This article offers parents and carers some ways in which they can reward children to reinforce good behaviour.

Why should a carer or parent reward a child?

Children gain confidence and security from being rewarded and it reinforces good and correct behaviour. A reward can be given straight away and shows the child that you are happy and pleased with them. Rewards motivate children and give them focus. They will have something to work towards.

What kind of reward should be given?

It is a good idea to start small, perhaps a sticker or candy. You could make a chart where they could list their stickers and when they reach a certain point on the chart, such as 15 stickers, reward them with something bigger. Children love stickers and collecting things so they will be encouraged to follow your rules and behave well.

Should one be cautious about rewarding too much?

Yes, if you give rewards too frequently, for everything they do, they may become dependent on rewards and will not feel like doing something if they are not going to be rewarded for it. They may start acting up just so they can be rewarded for correcting their behaviour.

They also need to learn to do things because they have to be done, not just because they will be rewarded. It is a good idea to be aware of these issues when rewarding so you reward only when it is deserved.I hope you have found this article useful and you have found the ideas in this article useful.
