Lee Westwood a golf player set to miss all tournaments before Celtic Manor

Lee Westwood will play no competitive golf between now and the Ryder Cup. It means that when the Englishman steps on to the first tee at Celtic Manor next month, it will be 74 days since he last completed a tournament.

Westwood has not played since limping out of the Bridgestone Invitational at the beginning of last month, and has not completed 72 holes since finishing runner up at The Open Championship in mid-July.

He is actually a week ahead of schedule and will start chipping and putting shortly before moving on to the long game next week, he said.

It is a worry when you have a player who has been out that long, conceded the captain of Europe Colin Montgomerie. But against that he will have three practice rounds at Celtic Manor and is a vastly experienced competitor. I have certainly got no qualms about him being there having not played a tournament.

Westwood will also have no score card in his hand, and so the odd bad hole will not be anything like as destructive as it would be in medal play. Nevertheless, with the debate continuing to rage over the selection of Europe's other totem Padraig Harrington, who will be under enormous pressure to justify his captain pick in Wales, the last thing needed was for question marks surrounding the team other patriarchal figure.

Should Westwood suffer a setback and feel he can't play at the Ryder Cup, Monty would have another pick and be able to use that option right up to the eve of the contest.

Westwood took six weeks off at the end of last year and was hopelessly out of sorts in his first tournament back. I know he will be there and I am confident he will play as we know he can.

Monty and Darren have done a brilliant job all round in keeping him involved, said Chandler. Lee was very down after pulling out of the Bridgestone tournament because the summer had gone so well and he had so much to look forward to, with the world No 1 spot up for grabs and the Ryder Cup. But he is picked himself up and everything is now geared towards those three days at the Ryder Cup.
