subject: Less People Brush Their Teeth [print this page]

If people would just brush their teeth, a disease which this dentist tries to cure would be virtually eliminated.

In reality, he adds that an estimate of 28 million people in the United States gravely suffer from gum disease or periodontitis.

Majority of these people will experience tooth decay at an early stage because of this disease. According to the director of the University of Washington's center for research in oral biology, Americans are generally affected by it and they annually spend $5 billion on dental care even if the disease is not lethal.

Electrical engineering, medicine and dentistry research and studies are in demand for the interdisciplinary fight against gum disease.

But in all their research they've found no better preventive than regular brushing and flossing of the teeth. The bone contains the teeth held by a connective tissue called collagen.

Collagen acts like guy wires and anything that disturbs it leads to the loosening and possible loss of the teeth, and a primary cause of this loosening appears to be plaque.

This happens because plaque carries 99 percent of microorganisms or bugs. This causes the gums and the supporting structure beneath to be irritated.

Bacteria develop on the surface of the teeth and soon act as colonizers if proper brushing and flossing of the teeth is not practiced.

The public's persuasiveness heightens and the search for a successful cure continues because many people still won't brush their teeth.

Earlier this year, it was reported that a mouthwash from Europe prevents plaque build up by killing bacteria in the mouth.

As what the dentist said, during the World War II, the British Army used bactericide chlorohexidine to sterilize surgical equipment.

It actually worked as a mouthwash, but still with a few drawbacks when it was applied by a Danish scientist.

The downside of it was that this newfound drug marks the teeth black after a moment of applying it. The Danish scientist also said that it also causes temporary loss of taste.

Other than the effects mentioned earlier, a more serious problem would be the potential of inducing cancer.

Quite a breaking news because drugs with the same structure as this has been safe for humans and animals for a long period of time. Now, there is another problem. Your mouth can be too clean.

Upon sterilizing your mouth, you also kill the bugs. In reality, our entire gastrointestinal tract contains bugs.

These bugs in fact are very important for they provide Vitamin K, speeds up digestion, and contribute to the metabolism of the human system.

I honestly don't know if it would obtain a positive or negative effect if we could get a drug that kills plaque only. For sure, I will place my money on bacteria that can overpower drugs.

It is because nearly all gum disease is not properly attended by people. Brushing definitely works if they do it.

The disease is curable if they will just do it. But this reason is not enough to encourage more people to do it.
