Experience Colonial Australia At Its Best!

Hidden away in South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia is old school romantic colonialism at its best. It is said that Edward Williams, a member of the colonial elite, proposed to his wife Jessie in Italy at Lake Como. They built the namesake house as a tribute to their engagement in 1847, merging classical Italian with Regal Australian architecture.

Unfortunately the couple together with their four children had no choice but to sell the property to an investor who later sold it to Scots John Brown and Helen, his wife. This couple added another storey, towers and out buildings and hired professional landscapers to completely change the gardens making it the breathtaking wonder it is today.

However they too could not hold on to the property and it then changed hands to Charles Armytage and Caroline, his wife, in 1864. The property remained within the Armytage family for nearly 95 years and one of the daughters' - Constance's - marriage to Captain Arthur Fitzpatrick, aide-de-camp of the Governor of Victoria reintroduced the romantic element that was originally a part of the property's aura, through the spectacular wedding.

Today, 160 years later, the Como Historic House and Gardens have proven to be a wonderful tourist attraction. Visitors are guided through a day in the life of the 19th century elite.

The spacious ballroom, pavilions and the gardens can be reserved for various events and is very popular as a wedding venue. The old school yet regal charm that permeates the entire property is an ideal backdrop for a wedding reception, be it an indoor or outdoor event.

Concerts and children's activities are just some of the other events that take place regularly at the venue. Visitors to Australia seeking Melbourne hotels will be pleased with The Langham Melbourne. This Melbourne hotel boasts of legendary service and hospitality to make your visit perfect.
