Redstone, Colorado Summer Activities

Located along Colorado's West Elk Scenic Byway, the charming little town of Redstone sits below towering red cliffs along the Crystal River. Full of history and world-class recreation, Redstone provides many unique and wonderful activities. During the summer months, check out these five outstanding things to do.

1. Tour Redstone Castle: Also known as the Cleveholm Manor, Redstone Castle was built in 1897 by the industrialist John Cleveland Osgood whose coal empire started the construction of the railroad along the Crystal River. The opulent 42-room tudor-style mansion was built for Osgood's second wife, Swedish Countess Alma Regina Shelgrem. The Redstone Castle has been the host to guests such as John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan, and Teddy Roosevelt. In 2006, the castle was used in the filming of The Prestige starring Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johansson. Now open for tours the historic Redstone Castle can currently be viewed by the public.

2. Experience the Outdoors: An outdoor enthusiast's paradise, Redstone is home to a long list of outdoor summer activities. The Crystal River provides the area with a wonderful place for fly fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. Surrounded by the White River National Forest, there are plenty of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. There are also excellent locations for jeep tours, as well as 4-wheeling.

3. Take a Carriage Ride: There is no better way to explore the alpine village of Redstone than by a horse drawn carriage. Take a ride through the beautiful historic town of Redstone or to the magnificent Redstone Castle.

4. Shop: Look for a unique treasure at one of the quaint shops full of home furnishings, fine art, antiques, handcrafted items, and more. The Hightower Trading Post is a jewelry emporium featuring vintage and contemporary Native American pieces as well as sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Tiffany of Redstone, the Avalanche Ranch Antique Store, and the Redstone Company Store have wonderful home furnishings and antiques. Don't forget to check out Wild Horse Enterprises, home of the Rocky Mountain Teddy Bear and amazing Rhythm Motion Clock.

5. Visit the Art Center: A studio gallery and sculpture garden, the Redstone Art Center holds artist demonstrations and exhibits during the summer season. Here you will fine original fine art including painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, wood, and photography. The Annual Stone Carvers' Exhibition opens in mid-July and runs through Labor Day. There are even opportunities to meet the artists.

Surrounded in an unspoiled and pristine setting, Redstone offers many unique and surprising activities for being such a small town. A great place to get away from it all, Redstone is one of Colorado's many gems worth escaping to during the summer season.
