Helping To Fight The Problem Of Childhood Obesity

It is pretty well known that this country has a problem with obesity and it is not only affecting adults, but it is a growing occurrence in our nation's most precious commodity, our children. Change, when it involves a large number of people, is always a slow process. But it has to start somewhere and it might as well be with you and the children of your community.

This is a change that has to begin with adults. Children are guided by adults for many years and it is up to us to guide them and give them the tools they need to live a healthy life and that includes their weight. We are not trying to make our children into swimsuit models, but we are trying to help them avoid medical conditions that are associated with making unhealthy choices.

Educate yourself and your children on good nutrition. Make it fun. Kids will do almost anything, if they enjoy it. Teach them what will benefit them and what will harm them in the long run. We teach our children to look both ways before they cross the street. We also want them to have all the foods that they enjoy, but it is important that they understand that they cannot have candy every day.

Fitness is essential and the times have changed to the point where we just don't spend the time outside enjoying activities the way we did in decades past. Set time aside to do things with your children that will keep them physically fit. Walk, ride bikes and swim together. Children learn by example and if you do no activities that keep you physically fit, you are going to have a hard time explaining to them why they should.

Video games and computers are big part of many children's lives. The Wii Fit can incorporate video games and physical fitness and there are other video game companies that have jumped on this band wagon.

Avoid fast food and convenience foods. These are 2 of the biggest causes of weight problems when it comes to food. That does not mean that your children cannot have McDonald's. They just can't have it every day. One of the best ways of eating healthy is to cook in bulk and freeze the food. This is a great way of avoiding making unhealthy choices when time is limited.

Living healthy does take planning, but it is much easier to live healthy than it is to try to reverse a medical condition that is the result of unhealthy choices. Begin today by making choices and teaching your children how to make choices that will keep them healthy.
