subject: Sinus Infections - The Best Treatments To Cure Sinusitis [print this page]

It is possible to cure sinus infections/sinusitis provided the correct treatments are used. Each year sinusitis affects about 37 million Americans. It is the most frequently reported chronic condition in the United States and the fifth most common reason for taking anti-biotics. It accounts for more than 13 million doctor visits per year in the United States alone.

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis also known as rhinosinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses caused by a sinus infection. This infection can be bacterial and/or fungal and is usually the result of increased nasal congestion, whereby proper sinus drainage is inhibited and the sinuses become a breeding ground for infections.

Increased nasal congestion can be caused by a common cold, allergies, a deviated nasal septum and nasal polyps.

The symptoms include sinus pain, headaches, tenderness, fatigue, nasal congestion etc. and can cause general suffering and misery.

What treatments are currently available and why don't they work?

Anti-biotics are usually prescribed for bacterial infections and they do get rid if sinus infections. However they don't help chronic sinusitis sufferers for a couple of reasons. Firstly, bacteria can become resistant to anti-biotics and they are ineffective. Secondly, if the source of the sinusitis is a fungal infection, anti-biotics are useless, and can make the infection worse.

Steroid and decongestant nasal sprays can relieve the symptoms but do not treat the underlying cause (the infection). They can be useful but are not a long term solution.

What are the best treatments to cure sinusitis?

Sinusitis should be tackled as follows;

Step 1 Kill the infection - A visit to the doctor to get prescribed anti-biotics is advisable. If these don't work then a natural nasal spray such as SinuSoothe is a great alternative and kills bacterial and fungal infections. This is extremely effective, is clinicall proven and is doctor recommended. Many sufferers also find nasal irrigation to be helpful but there is no conclusive evidence that this kills infections.

Step 2 Reduce the inflammation - If, after the infection has gone, the symptoms still persist, it is advisable to take natural anti-inflammatories (sinusitis is caused by inflammation) such as Turmeric and Omega Oils. These will reduce the inflammation and unlike Ibuprofen etc. they can be taken daily with no side effects. For allergy sufferers where nasal congestion and a runny nose is still a problem over the counter ant-histamines should be taken. There are also great natural anti-histamines available such as Butterbur that have been clinically proven to be just as effective as the OTC ones, but without the side effects.

Where nasal polyps or a deviated nasal septum are causing nasal congestion, surgery or balloon sinuplasty may be required.

It is always best to consult your healthcare professional before using new treatments.
