subject: Treatment Of Schizophrenia [print this page]

Depression and schizophrenia are often associated with each other. Experts strongly relate this disease with clinical depression, as they both commonly have the symptoms of depression. This disease is more obvious in teenagers and it makes its diagnosis process more severe as the moods of teenagers are quite severe and often very demanding.

Schizophrenia is common worldwide. Almost all the people living at any place or area on globe have the same level of incidences, i.e. between 0.5 to 1.5 per cent over a life time. This is true for only this disease that it is common all over the world regardless of any race, culture, or social circumstances. The countries having diet with high intake of saturated fat are more prone to this disease and the treatment is much more complex in those countries than the ones with low saturated fat diet. High saturated fat diet is considered as destructive element for fatty acids and results in the production of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid).

Symptoms

Schizophrenia is a disease with varied symptoms, which can vary in number and intensity like all other depressive symptoms. The symptoms can be mild or severe. The mildest symptoms include the exceptional thought patterns that can push boundaries in science and arts. Other symptoms may include: hallucinations, where the schizophrenic hears voices, sometimes commanding them to perform totally irrational and often destructive tasks; general hostility to those close to them; lack of response to those close to the sufferer, or a cold, blank response; delusions and paranioa, where they come to believe that they are the victim of hostile forces which are trying to control and persecute them; an increasing need for solitude; disrupted sleep patterns where the sufferer can end up sleeping during the day and staying awake all night; bizarre thought patterns and connections which confuse both themselves and others; agitation and restlessness.

Treatment

If we talk about the treatment of this disease in long term, it is quite complicated and tough to treat this disease successfully, but this does not mean that it is not recoverable. To control the hallucination symptoms, Antipsychotic drugs like chloropromazine is used along with other supportive ways. It helps to stabilize the moods of the patient and is considered as the main part of the treatment.

Research has been made on schizophrenia by many of the renowned researcher to find out the causes and treatment of this disease. The important work has been done by Alex Richardson, Basant Puri, David Horrobin, Jan Mellor, Malcolm Peet, and Krishna Vaddadi. They all have discovered and unified over EPA as a treatment for depression. Studies have shown that it has no side effects and considerably soothe the symptoms of schizophrenia.

But if you are on any other antipsychotic drug treatment, dont stop using it without consulting your physician. Another important point here to remember is, dont take any drug or medicine until it is prescribed any physician. Prevention is always a better cure.

It is always necessary to follow the instructions given by your doctor. Appropriate treatment is only possible when you have a proper diagnosis of the disease.
