"I'm just so happy you're done with that dance business" says Dad to mop-topped son Moose on his first day at NYU. What dance business would that be? If you saw Step Up 2 The Streets, you'll know. If you didn't, wait ten seconds and you'll find out.

No sooner is the old man out of sight than Moose is wowing the campus crowds with his freestyle shapes. Then the cops appear and Moose does a runner with another hoofer (Malambri) who's called Luke Katcher but looks like Ashton Kutcher.

Disappointingly for a hip-hop movie, this lyrical opportunity is never seized upon.

Anyway, Luke reckons Moose is BFAB "Born From A Boombox"... which also happens to be the title of the documentary he's making about his dance crew The Pirates, a multinational collection of waifs and strays who live in Luke's downtown warehouse.

Filmmaker, choreographer, mentor, philosopher, philanthropist, romantic, and all-round studmuffin; Luke is so cool it's a wonder the Pirates haven't all died of hypothermia.

Actually, this may yet happen as Luke is behind on the mortgage and the bank is about to leave them all out in the cold.

If only there was some sort of big competition where they could win $100,000 or so - and maybe beat arch-rivals The Samurai (boo!) into the bargain... Hang on a minute!

All they have to do is invent the hippest, hoppingest moves New York's ever seen, put pressure on Moose to ditch his studies and let down his best friend Camille (Alyson Stoner), and hope that Luke's super-talented new girlfriend Natalie (Sharni Vinson) sticks around until the big event. Hmm.

Like any teen-pleaser, Step Up 3D works best when it lets the action do the talking.

Returning from Step Up 2, director Jon Chu makes the most of the 3D in a succession of in-yer-face sequences, including one on a flooded dance floor and the dazzling, ten-minute climax performed in neon-lit outfits.

But some of the smaller touches are just as satisfying. Moose and Camille's single-take homage to Singin' In The Rain is a gem.

On the downside, the shameless product placement / worship of a certain brand of swooshy footwear is dispiriting. With so much corn and cheese in the script, a more appropriate sponsor would have been Doritos.

But this is all about the moves and on that score Step Up 3D is BFAB - blatant fun; almost brilliant.
