A Festive Feast Of Television This Christmas

Christmas can be such an exciting time, full of anticipation from start to finish. As soon as the seasonal stock makes its ever earlier way into the shops, the countdown begins. In fact many just can't wait to put up their Christmas decorations and play their Christmas music, and that's before November is even out! But for some, the excitement of what's going to be on the box can become a eagerly awaited Christmas highlight!

Yes, with a break from school or work many look forward to simply putting their feet up and relaxing by tucking into a festive feast of television! It's hard to tell which they get more excited about the release of the Christmas TV guides or what presents they might receive from Santa! But has Christmas television lost its appeal? Maybe our perception or perhaps expectations change as we get older?

This is because Christmas television can usually be divided up into 3 main categories; films, soaps and repeats, oh and not forgetting a Christmas bonus treat of seasonal specials! There was a time when you could count on Christmas to double your film collection, what with all the channels trying to outdo each other by snagging the best film premieres. But these days, they'll maybe one or two films that might light your eyes up, whilst the rest are just meh'.

Then there are the soaps. Ah yes, Christmas gives most people the opportunity to catch up and spend time with family and friends. After overdoing it with the turkey, mince pies and chocolates, most just look forward to slumping on the sofa together and enjoying their favourite soaps. So why is it that every Christmas in soap-land is filled with such tragic events and sensationally depressing storylines? I mean, where's the fun in that?

Of course it's all for the ratings war, but seriously; wouldn't it make such a refreshing and welcome change to have something happy' happen at Christmas instead of somebody being killed off, something being blown up or the long awaited revelation and subsequent outcome of some tempestuous affair?

However, you can always count on TV repeats to fill in the seasonal holiday schedule! From classic sitcoms to murder mysteries, it becomes a race as to who can say "Oh I know what happens in this one!" first! Let's face it though; Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without certain repeats, whether we like to watch them or not!

Then there are the seasonal specials. Dramas and comedy series put together one-off's just for Christmas. You can usually find a celebrity filled pantomime floating around somewhere, which can be entertaining! Christmas also see's the finals of reality television shows too. So, who will be crowned as champion of Strictly Come Dancing this year and who will win X-Factor and possibly hit the Christmas No.1 record spot too?

Whether you love it or loathe it, you can usually find something to entertain you, or fall asleep too on the box! Failing that, you'd better get your DVD, video games and music or book orders into Santa early!
