subject: Getting Rid Of Genital Warts - Treatment And Care [print this page]

Genital warts are caused by a virus called HPV, which short for human papillomavirus. This sexually transmitted disease causes outbreaks of lesions and pimples to spread and grow across the genital areas of both men and women. Warts may also show up on the thighs or buttocks or even on the stomach. The virus is transmitted through sexual contact first and foremost. When the genitals of an infected person come into contact with a non-infected person's genitals, the chances of transmitting the virus are highly increased. Getting rid of genital warts is never going to be easy, but sometimes it is possible.

The warts themselves are often small, less than one centimeter across, but they grow and form in clumps that can get to be quite large sometimes. Genital warts are not usually painful to the person who has them, but they may be itchy sometimes. This can be especially uncomfortable if the warts grow and spread inside the body, such as inside the anus or vagina or the cervix. When this is the case, getting rid of genital warts will probably become a big priority for the infected person.

The first thing to consider when you want to think about getting rid of genital warts is the severity of your outbreak. If your outbreaks are very bad, happen quite often, become very large, bleed profusely, or are otherwise very cumbersome, you might want to consider options like laser surgery. This is when the lesions are removed with a laser. Another option is called electrodessication. With this procedure, electric shocks are applied to the area where the outbreak is, and this kind of energy current kills the warts. Both of these treatments have their drawbacks, however. They are expensive, and they have side effects that may include infections and scarring, and they don't treat the HPV virus itself.

Another option for getting rid of genital warts is topical creams. Many people prefer topical creams for a variety of reasons. This is a benevolent form of treatment that soothes the skin instead of potentially scarring it or depleting it of nutrients. Some highly effective creams contain anti-fungal properties that work to kill the warts. They also contain vitamins and antioxidants that stimulate the bloodstream and immune system. It is your immune system that will need to be strong to overcome the HPV virus and get rid of genital warts for good.
