Tourist Attractions in Namibia

Windhoek is the capital city of Namibia. It is situated in the middle of the country in a beautiful green valley between the Eros and Auras mountains. This town was the former stronghold during the German colonization and the architectural structures which survive to date make tourists understand the overwhelming influence the Germans had. This includes the administrative building which is the main tourist center which has two museums (Owela and State) Other architecture include Christuskirche palace, Tintenpalast palace, Alte Feste and Gross Barmen. The combination of old and modern architecture makes the city beautiful and very attractive.

Etosha National park is the largest and most impressive with a wide variety of game. This park was conserved in 1907 and has a total area of about 22,270 square kilometers. About one hundred and fourteen mammals and three hundred and forty bird species have been recorded here. This park has three resorts namely Hatali, Namutoni and Okaukuejo all of which have water holes. Large numbers of animals converge here at any time of the day or night thereby allowing tourists' time for game viewing and also photographing. The Etosha is an attractive geographical feature formed from a shallow depression. It is 1065m above sea level and forms a huge salty hollow which is occasionally filled with water. This hollow is surrounded by bush and vegetation which provide food to many wild animals such as zebras, lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, kudus, hyenas, springboks, giraffes, jackals and gemsboks.

Namibia Desert is the worlds' oldest desert and, it stretches from Kunene river to the north and the Orange river to the south. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The cold Benguela current that sweeps down the African continent creates a morning fog over the country which helps many animals and plants to survive. Some attractive sites in this area include the Swakopmund town. It is situated in the seaside where the palm trees, promenades and the colonial architecture add to its beauty. Walvis bay town lies south of Swakopmund. It was discovered by the early whalers as a rare deep water bay on a shallow coastline. It is home to about forty percent of South African pink flamingoes and various bird species.

The Skeleton Coast makes a fantastic scenery. It is here that skeleton bones and shipwrecks are swept by the cold sea breezes and seen scattered all over the coastline. Skeleton Coast is situated within a park; however only part of the area is open to the public. Spitzkoppe iceberg is a rock climbing Mecca and is another interesting site. The climbing is tough and involves tip toeing as you make your way up the rock cracks.
