What Is The Animators Job

The picture of the house is finished and given to a special artist. This artist is called an animator. He is the one who draws the pictures of the things that move. The animator works on a glass drawing board that has a light underneath it. He uses thin white paper so that the light will show through. The animator draws his first picture of the man starting to walk up to the house. Next, he draws a picture of the man just after he has started his first step, with his foot a little farther forward. The next picture shows the man with his foot out still farther.

Each picture is just a little different from the picture before it and the picture after it. Each picture is placed on top of the ones done before. The light shining from underneath makes it possible for the animator to see the outline of each picture. This makes it easy for him to see how the motion is being shown. In the case we are describing, he can see each part of the steps the man is taking, as the man walks toward the house. Let us say it takes the man five seconds to reach the door of the house. That is, it will take the man five seconds as we watch him on the screen.

For each second of the man's walk, the animator must draw twenty-four separate pictures. That makes 120 pictures altogether for the five-second walk. Twenty four pictures for each second of action are necessary, because twenty-four frames of motion-picture film are projected on a screen during each second we watch a motion picture. Each picture the animator draws must be different from the picture before it and the picture after it by just the right amount. Otherwise the man will walk with a jerky motion.
