subject: Is The Economy Creating Business For Dentists? [print this page]

The U.S. economy has been deteriorating significantly for some time now, with little indication of recovery on the horizon. This has put many citizens under extreme stress as they struggle to keep their heads above water. You may not realize it, but a body under stress is negatively affected in a number of important ways.

Some people grind their teeth while sleeping, also known as bruxism. There are no clear answers about what causes bruxism, despite many studies. Most medical professionals agree that stress can be a contributing factor.

With the stress levels so high across the country, bruxism should be more of a problem than ever before. People are living everyday not knowing what the next one will bring and so many people are worried about their future. This means more and more people might be grinding their teeth and doing long-term damage to them. Surely trips to the dentist are up everywhere.

One of the biggest problems with grinding teeth is that so many people do it while they are sleeping. This means many of them are totally unaware that they are doing it at all and it can go years before the damage is visible. Dentists are usually the ones who diagnose the problem, as they are able to see minute changes in your teeth.

The most common way to combat grinding your teeth at night is to wear a mouth guard. Unfortunately, the one the dentist will give you is custom made and can cost over $500. In this economy, that is an amount few people may want to spend for something that is not life threatening. You can get a mouth guard that is not custom made for much less and those are probably quite popular right now.

When finances are tight, people may cut out their dental appointments because they have other expenses more pressing than their teeth. However, teeth grinding at night may cause more people than every to see a dentist during these stressful economic times.
